Eighteen counselors from Rutland area high schools and technical centers gathered at CCV-Rutland’s new building on March 30, 2012. While enjoying breakfast, prepared by Stafford Technical Center students, they listened to CCV staff presentations on new programs, financial aid resources, and the Introduction to College Studies and Dual Enrollment courses available to high school students throughout Vermont. The counselors were given handouts to use with students currently in high school (ICS and Dual Enrollment options) and with seniors interested in applying to college.
A panel of current CCV students, talking about what helped them manage the transition from high school to college, represented the wide range of students high school counselors help. A current high schooler who took ICS is now using the free class voucher to get college credit during her senior year, and another student chose CCV when she graduated because of the small classes and community- based focus. Two veterans spoke about their experiences looking for work without a college degree when they returned from duty, and a high-school dropout described how the support she got at CCV helped her find direction and prepare for the bachelor’s degree she currently is pursuing.
