Being French

May 16, 2018 by Justin Bourdeau

Today is the last full day of our adventure. We have seen so many monuments of history and culture. Today being Sunday, there was a lot of foot traffic on the streets. People walking to work, the local boulangerie, a café, or the markets. Being here for a week has dramatically changed the way I feel about navigating. I am more comfortable in this surrounding than I thought I would be.

Around noon, I headed to a local café to grab a crêpe. As I was enjoying my crêpe and chocolat chaud I watched people walk by chatting with one another. I watched as people were sitting next to me and at other cafés to enjoy drinks. I was not used to seeing so many people go out just for drinks. I felt immersed in the culture, like I was a true Frenchman, sitting at a café drinking my chocolat chaud, watching the people walk.

The connection the people of France have to food is incredible. As much as I loved seeing the cathedrals and other monuments, experiencing the culture and meeting new people was just as exciting. I will never forget the experiences France has given me, such as my fascinating interaction with a sister at Mont Saint-Michel or getting used to showering with a half glass door as my shower guard. This trip will never be forgotten. I will forever respect the power of food in culture.
