Community College of Vermont to hold 52nd Commencement June 1st

May 15, 2019 by Katie Keszey

MONTPELIER, Vt. — The Community College of Vermont (CCV) will hold its 52nd commencement ceremony at Norwich University’s Shapiro Field House in Northfield, Vermont on Saturday, June 1. The ceremony will begin at 2:00 p.m.

Nearly 500 students will be awarded associate degrees. Students representing all of Vermont’s 14 counties will be graduating, along with students from 8 other states and 13 countries. Also among the graduates are 45 veteran and military students. The youngest graduate is 17 and the oldest is 76.

The College is pleased to announce that Ric Cabot, president and CEO of Cabot Hosiery Mills/Darn Tough Vermont, will deliver this year’s commencement address. Cabot started Darn Tough in 2004 in an effort to save Cabot Hosiery Mills after their brands began to outsource labor. With a focus on quality and a healthy local economy, Darn Tough has become an industry leader in the outdoor and lifestyle sock markets.

This year’s student speaker is Kayce Penn, who attended CCV’s Upper Valley academic center. Penn is graduating with an A.A. in design and media studies. She plans to expand her business, Kay Mae Designs, a sustainable events production company she started in 2017.

Brattleboro Memorial Hospital President and CEO Steven R. Gordon will receive the 2019 Community Service Award. Gordon and BMH partner with CCV to deliver the College to Career program, which prepares students for jobs as medical assistants at the Hospital, as well as an environmental services program. Gordon serves on the Boards of several local non-profits, including the Brattleboro Development Credit Corporation, the Brattleboro Boys and Girls Club, and OneCare Vermont. He is the incoming chairperson for the Vermont Association of Hospitals and Health Systems.

CCV President Joyce Judy will officiate the event. Governor Phil Scott and members of the Vermont State Colleges Board of Trustees will be in attendance.
