I grew up in a middle class household in upstate New York. I initially moved to Vermont in 1994 to take a job as a seasonal rock climbing counselor at the Farm and Wilderness Foundation in Plymouth. I relocated permanently to Vermont in 1998. Before I ran for Senate, I was a history and social studies teacher in several public schools in southern Vermont. I also taught history at the Community College of Vermont in Brattleboro.
